Review GSM phone Samsung X460
Samsung became very often to release new models, especially that
concerns new models of clamshells appearing on the shelves every
month. The majority of the devices are positioned in the high-end
price segment and thus low-end models are of greater interest. Let's
remember Samsung
X450 that didn't seem to compete seriously with already
introduced models by other manufacturers due to the absence of the
outer screen. But even before the start of the sales the model was
of great interest and it became the hit of the sales just on its
appearance. The same fate and even more successful is predicted to
Samsung
X460. The company accounts this device will replace À800
successfully considering young girls of 15-26 to be the main target
group. Secondly the company intends the phone for young men, the
sales will probably be at a ratio of 75 to 25.
Samsung
X100 was takes as a base, the filling of these two devices is
completely the same. Naturally the fact that X460 is a clamshell
left an imprint and specificity. Samsung X460 is one of the first
without an external antenna and that fact allowed giving even more
roundish edges than in Å700.
The device with its average dimensions of 83x46x21 mm and weight of
75 grams is comfortable to hold in a hand. As for the control
buttons, a coupled volume level button is worth pointing out. It's
placed on the left-side surface, a headset connector is a bit higher
and it is covered with a rubber shutter. The model is compatible
with other devices by the company in the interface connector.
An external screen is monochrome that allows making out text and
time on it in the standby mode in any conditions. The resolution is
96x64 pixels, a text line and a status one are displayed.
Having opened the phone we'll see an internal 65K screen with the
resolution of 128x160 pixels (UFB). As different to the models of
higher price segment the screen is acceptable but doesn't amaze with
vivacity and saturation of colors. Such screen fades in the sun more
than a TFT one and that's natural. In general the screen is not so
bad low-end solution but not more.
A keypad is designed traditionally with a blue backlighting
clearly seen in various conditions. The only deviation from usual
forms is a key curve, the keys are prominent and wave-like. They are
comfortable to work with and no any problems rouse.
The device is equipped with a 800 mAh Li-Ion battery. According
to the manufacturer it 's capable of providing about 3.5 hours of
talk time and about 250 hours of standby time. In Moscow the device
worked for about 4 days in case of 40 minutes of talks and minimal
use of other functions. Full recharging takes about 2 hours.
Menu
The main menu is represented as headlines with animated pictures
with three first items of the selected menu under. Each of the items
is numbered and number navigation is available. Unfortunately,
navigation is possible only along a selected item of the main menu.
That's in some kind an atonement for the organization.
 
This product has an very good localization. There are T9
vocabularies for all menu languages. While inputting data, it is
possible to switch them. Russian predictive text input is also
available. Like other products by the company T9 is always active by
default and if you don't use the function you'll have to deactivate
it every time.
Phone book. Up to 1000 phone numbers can be
stored in the phone memory. Up to 5 phone numbers, e-mail can be
added to one name. All phone numbers can be grouped in caller groups
(up to 6). It is possible to assign a melody or a picture to each
entry. Unfortunately only pre-default picture can be assigned. It is
impossible to add a picture taken by a digital camera. Today it is
the main shortcoming of the phones from Samsung.
 
 
 
 
Horizontal scrolling allows listing bookmarks and viewing the
phone numbers. Both phone numbers from SIM-card and phone memory are
displayed in the total list. There is a search by name, you need
just to enter first letters of the name to change the list.
You can adjust up to 9 fast dial numbers.
Messages. There are two separate items, which
allows operating with SMS and MMS messages relatively. Up to 200
SMS-messages can be stored in the phone. There are up to 9 editable
SMS-templates. The phone supports EMS, so it is possible to add
pictures, animation and melodies. Set of standard files is usual,
there are no changes compared to other models.
 
 
 
Now it is more comfortable to work with MMS-messages. When you
create a message, a template with fields to input text, music,
picture, theme appears. Everything is direct and convenient. You can
create several pages, set showing time between them, adjust font
(size, style). The maximum size of one MMS-message couldn’t exceed
80 Kb.
 
There is a special folder for drafts and own messages. Memory for
storing photos and MMS-messages is shared dynamically. Total memory
pool is about 7 Mb. It’s more than sufficient for the phone of this
class.
Call records. There are lists of 20 missed, 20
received and 20 dialed calls in the phone. Time and date of each
call is indicated in this menu. You can also view time of the last
call, total time of all incoming and outgoing calls.
Sounds. The phone supports 40-tones polyphony,
which sounds not bad. There are several modes of incoming alert, for
example, only sound, only vibracall, and then a melody. Other
settings are standard. You can select signal tone for SMS-messages,
MMS-messages, adjust minute minder during the talk, select silent
mode (only vibra).
Settings. Apart from greeting messages, you can
adjust display settings here. You can set animation (up to 5
pre-default ones) as a wallpaper. It is possible to select font
style and location of text.
 
 
 
 
 
 
One of the 4 color schemes is available.
Duration of backlighting can be also different (from 15 seconds
to 10 minutes). The longest value is interesting for those who like
to play games. In this case they will not move keys to activate
backlighting while playing a game.
There are up to 15 points of brightness of the screen.
Organizer. You can easily add a new reminder (up
to 100 characters). After inputting text, you could select one of
the categories (Schedule, to-do list, call, anniversary). Depending
on the selected category, different actions will be offered. For
example, if you select a schedule, you will see a calendar, then
select a day, indicate time, set alarm-clock. Then, this record will
be saved and displayed in the separate window. Unlimited number of
records could be added to one day, totally up to 25 records of each
category are available. When you view several records added for one
day, you could see the number of the current one. On the whole, the
organizer is well-realized.
 
 
 
World time functions is usual. The same is related to calculator,
unit converter, including currency converter. Countdown timer,
stop-watch with intermediate results are also available in the
phone.
 
 
Alarm-clock can be set only for one time. The user can use an
autopower on/off function. Alarm-clock will be active even if the
phone is switched off.
 
Network services. Just settings, connected with
calls divert and etc.
Fun Box. Wap-browser of 2.0 version is hidden
here. It allows to view color images. The phone supports GPRS 4+2.
So, you won’t pay much for browsing.
 
All received pictures, images and melodies are kept in Media Box.
There are two pre-installed games in the phone: Bubble Smile,
SnowBallFight. New games may be uploaded since the phone supports
Java.
Impressions
Samsung X460 is a copy of X100 with the only difference in the
body. The volume of 40-tones polyphony is enough for the majority of
situations and the device is heard well (about 39 melodies are
preset). The power of the vibrating alert is average and thus it's
heard not always. The quality of the sound in the loudspeaker rouses
no cavils as well as the quality of connection.
 
 
X460 is the leading offer in a clamshell segment. One shouldn't
get mistaken with the device, it's now offered as a middle-class
solution and in a year the phone will cost about 120-130 USD. The
same happened with Samsung
À800 that was replaced by Õ460.
The model will be extremely popular among the youth and especially
those who are interested in style, need a colour screen and
polyphony. The only serious difference from low-end devices is its
interesting design and the presence of the internal antenna. The
"margin of safety" (we are speaking about its life circle) is very
big for the model and as a result it's possible to expect the
continuation of an advertising activity for a long time.
